Established in 1884, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a premier warship building company in India, operates under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence. It began as a modest workshop, servicing vessels for the River Steam Navigation Company, before being nationalized by the Government of India in 1960. GRSE's illustrious history includes building India's first indigenous warship, the INS Ajay, for the Indian Navy in 1961. Over the years, it has constructed a diverse range of vessels, including the first Indian export warship for Mauritius, a Fast Patrol Vessel for Seychelles, and an Ocean-Going Cargo & Passenger Ferry Vessel for Guyana. Recognized as a Miniratna Category I Company in 2006, GRSE has delivered over 790 platforms, including 109 warships, to the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and friendly foreign countries. Its portfolio spans frigates, corvettes, fleet tankers, and more. Beyond shipbuilding and repair, GRSE is involved in engine production, engineering activities, and manufacturing deck machinery items, portable steel bridges, and marine pumps. Notable achievements include awards for designing silent ships and offshore patrol vessels, along with recognition as the Best Performing Defence Shipyard in India for four consecutive years. With modernized infrastructure and concurrent capacity for 20 ships, GRSE continues its pursuit of excellence and quality in shipbuilding.
