As a Catholic institution, Notre Dame University Forms part of the saving mission of the Church, especially for education in faith (Gravissimum Educationis, 3). To fulfill this mission the University founds its whole educational enterprise in Christ and His Word (Congregation for Catholic Education, the Catholic School) and links itself with the magisterium, the guardian of the faith (Lumen Gentium, 25). With all its distinctive aims and means, the University offers itself in service to all, non-Christians included, acknowledging, preserving and promoting the spiritual and moral goods found among these persons as well as the values in their society and culture (Nostre Aetate, 2). As an institution of higher learning granted university status, Notre Dame University is called to be an "authentic center" for teaching, research and extension services in the area. While giving due importance to the pragmatic scope of these functions, Notre Dame University as a Catholic institution raises its gaze to higher goals, pointing out values and perspectives which render the vision of person complete because it offers a breath of university and spirituality (Baum, on Pope John Paul II's Teaching Concerning the Aims and Functions of a Catholic University). We have a special devotion to Mary who not only has been given to us by Jesus as our Mother when he said "Behold the Mother" (jn. 19:17) but also because as a community we bear Her name, Notre Dame. Cotemplating Mary's mysterious sanctity, imitating her charity, and her faithful fulfillment of the Father's will, we hope to help bring forth to a new and immortal life, persons who are conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of God (Lumen Gentium, 64). In her life we find an example of that love by which we should be animated in our apostolate (Lumen Gentium, 65). Thus, like Mary, we are to be hearers, bearers, and doers of the Word (Lk. 8, 21, 11:27-28).The NDU CORE Values of Faith, Integrity, Respect, Excellence and Service (FIRES) direct, govern, guide, nurture and sustain at all times the life of Notre Dame University.
