The Eastern Region Association of Forest and Nature Schools (ERAFANS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides professional development and community-based initiatives to cultivate equitable, inclusive opportunities for nature-based education. We offer professional development opportunities across the United States to nature preschools, forest kindergartens, and nature-based schools as well as public and private schools, nature centers, home school centers, parks and recreation departments, child care centers, daycare, and the like. Many of our programs focus on schools and families in Title 1 areas who traditionally lack access to the benefits of nature-based education. Wherever children are, we are! We know that to help children connect with the natural world, we must support those who facilitate their daily learning experiences. In person training includes the Nature-Based Teacher Certification course, a 36-clock hour training, that provides a strong foundation for outdoor learning, no matter the setting. We partner with schools and centers to offer Outdoor Teacher Retreats, the Natural Wonder Summit Members Gathering, and other hands-on teacher training. A range of online training ensures that nature-based learning is accessible and affordable (or free). Over 1200 members also lend their support to our work. Our community-based programming includes initiatives that serve children and families. The Forest Days Outdoor Learning Program is a model for year-round outdoor education in Title 1 public schools. We have ongoing partnerships with Title 1 schools and Judy Centers in Philadelphia, PA; Falls Church, VA; and Baltimore, MD. Notchcliff Nature Programs is a community-based initiative in the greater Baltimore region on the grounds of Glen Meadows Retirement Community. Programs are 100% outdoors on nearly 400 acres. Notchcliff includes forest preschool, forest homeschool cooperative, community events, and nature programs with community elders.
