O Departamento Municipal de Limpeza Urbana (DMLU) é a autarquia do município de Porto Alegre responsável pela limpeza urbana e manejo dos resíduos sólidos urbanos. O DMLU realiza as coletas domiciliar (de resíduos orgânicos e rejeito) e seletiva (de resíduos recicláveis) em 100% das ruas de Porto Alegre. Todo o material recolhido pela seletiva é encaminhado para as Unidades de Triagem para separação, enfardamento e venda para a reciclagem, gerando emprego e renda e reduzindo os impactos ao meio ambiente. Parte dos resíduos orgânicos é aproveitada em processo de compostagem e em projeto de produção de alimentos para suínos. Outra grande parte, junto com o rejeito, é encaminhada para o Aterro Sanitário de Minas do Leão, localizado a pouco mais de 100 quilômetros de Porto Alegre.
