Smoky Lake Forest Nursery Ltd. (SLFN) is a year-round operating container tree seedling nursery. We have two crop cycles annually (two seeding and two harvest seasons annually). We grow tree seedlings and native species to the forestry and oil and gas industries. We annually grow over nine million seedlings. Main activities throughout the year include seeding, thinning, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, crop maintenance, greenhouse setup and maintenance. We also grow plug trees in outside fields during the summer months. SLFN was established in 1997. Before 1997, it was operated under Pine Ridge as a Government Facility. It privatized in 1997 but still operates today under a Government Lease on the Alberta Tree Improvement and Seed Centre outside of Smoky Lake, Alberta. SLFN is part of the Coast to Coast Reforestation Co-operative (C2C). C2C is Alberta's largest producer of tree seedlings for reforestation and reclamation. SLFN is C2C's second largest nursery.
