BioSolAfla aims to generate an innovative and sustainable bioprocess solution for the production of biocontrol agent against toxigenic Aspergillus species, particularly species A. flavus. A. flavus is an aflatoxin contaminant of agricultural commodities, and poses a big hindrance to food and feed safety, international trade and human and animal health. Therefore, the main objective of the BioSolAfla is to meet consumers' food preferences while ensuring minimal impact on human health and the environment. Although other strategies are being applied worldwide to reduce aflatoxin contamination, pre-harvest biocontrol seems to be the most promising. However, despite high expectations on biopesticides commercialization, the current trend in crop protection still heavily relies on chemical compounds with biopesticides holding just 5% of the total market. Hence, the principal aim of BioSolAfla is a development of bioprocess solution that will fulfil maximal biocontrol capacity of selected antagonistic Bacillus strain, thus making research results applicable at the industrial level with the perspective of entering the market of bio-based products intended for use in agriculture.
