Reclaiming Our Roots

Reclaiming our Roots is about the opportunity to start the next chapter of our lives by embarking on a journey to reconnect to what essentially makes us who we are. That specific element is Africa! We want to portray the Black Woman in its fullest sense. We want to celebrate and appreciate the Black Woman, most importantly we want to define what it means to be a Black Woman to ourselves. Up to this point, society has a played a huge role on what it means to be a Black Woman in America. Contrary to popular belief, the heart of the Black Woman starts by truly knowing herself and understanding her rich heritage. How can you do that if you do not understand where you come from? We want to reexamine the essence of a Black Woman period. What better place than the birthplace of what essentially is blackness, AFRICA!So all this sounds wonderful, but how do we define such a creature. You don't! Instead you create a story and show that a Black Woman can not be defined merely by a textbook definition. There is depth to her being, a set of constant evolving stories that create her narrative. In order for that narrative to be heard you have to go to the source. And that is exactly what we plan to do. We will portray black girl magic in its fullest sense. We could easily take a dna test and find out what country we are from, but it is bigger than that. The continent as a whole has a lot to offer and teach us as women of the African diaspora.
