As in the geological science of ‘plate tectonics', Play Tectonics is a way to MOVE the continental world of learning culture FORWARD on the power of PLAY. We are educators, scientists, engineers, and artists playing to grow a grassroots movement in order to make play a central organizing principle of pedagogy. At Play Tectonics, we imagine a new face on education, one mirrored in the image of young people. The only way to achieve this is for adults in our communities to create a space for adults to learn what children know implicitly: That play-infused communication is the most natural and direct way to reach children's playful minds. Our conventional learning spaces must change quickly and must emulate the one refuge of time and space that children find naturally and intelligently in themselves. Kids come into the world equipped with curiosity. We can no longer deny children the right to exercise their innate power to learn --in the name of education.If play is that all-encompassing grace residing untapped in the young, we can start by making play a constant source of energy in the learning culture. If play is nature's path to mental health, intelligence and well being, we must find a way to make play radiate its power in the classroom. If the walls of the learning culture are made of industrial-grade concrete, we must remember that play energy lies dormant, untapped yet abundant inside the system's walls. All we really have to do is create play-based tools and strategies that call upon play inside the walls and minds of learning spaces, regardless of the institutional thinking that keeps the walls erect. And that is the story of Play Language.
