A young man at the age of 18, he became drawn to the whorls and lore found in a simple wood grain. From the humble beginnings of an apprentice cabinet maker, he honed his craft from the massive work that fine cabinetry demanded and slowly whittled his way through the years to the more refined work found in his watch boxes and humidors today.The work has always remained intimate and precious, with each process meticulously thought out to highlight the simplicity and natural beauty of the wood and the aesthetics of each client. His portfolio of work boasts many clients of prestige and fame, from Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, Donald Trump, Oscar De La Renta, Rudolf Nureyev and many more. His work has also been featured in the New York Times Magazine (September 1993).As an ode to his Costa Rican roots, Leonel prefers the rare and exotic wood found in his homeland and strives to bring their beauty to the world. To preserve the beauty for future generations, all the wood selected has been sourced ethically and undergo a rigorous process to ensure that only the best quality woods enter the workshop. Leonel personally sees through every detail from beginning to end to produce a small number of bespoke pieces and has now expanded his work to include his son Leo in the operations and inspiration. What had begun with Leo's simple search of a watch box to house his growing collection of timepieces, became the start of a family business. With over 10 years of luxury retail experience under his belt, his tastes and needs were very specific. Failing to find a suitable match in a world of mass-produced goods, he naturally turned to his father for it's creation, which would become the very first classic in the collection, Leonardo J, named after Leo's firstborn son.
