Joensuu Science Society was founded in 2009 to popularize science and promote activities of universities especially in Eastern Finland. The main activity of Joensuu Science Society is SciFest festival for science and technology. SciFest is an international science and technology festival which takes place in Joensuu, Finland, in April every year. It focuses on pupils, students and teachers with special interest in scientific phenomena and of learning and teaching science. The aim of SciFest festival is to bring science, technology and the environment closer to young people in challenging and interesting ways. Its aim is also to find solutions for education and educational and vocational needs of the future. There are hundreds of workshops available for the pupils as well as training, in the form of lectures and workshops, for the teachers. The festival is open also to the general public. In 2009 our most distinguished guest speaker was Mr. Harrison H. Schmitt (Ph.D.), former NASA astronaut, who was the 12th man ever on the Moon. The program features also public science cafés, and open workshops. SciFest is future-oriented and international in nature. In previous years we have had visitors from as far as South Africa and Taiwan, along with several European countries. Contributors to the program have arrived from over 50 countries worldwide.This year's SciFest theme is Chemistry, following the international UNESCO's theme year.
