A native of southern California, David John Rau is a self-taught artist whose natural talent is to paint what he sees – literally. Working in oils, acrylics, metals and various mixed mediums, David is drawn to images in nature as well the use of interesting and unlikely materials emphasizing form and function. Most recently, David's works on canvas combine the abstract with his strong roots in photo-realism. With each of new piece, David starts a multi-step process turning a blank canvas into a wildly abstract kaleidoscope of color. After close study and what often takes weeks, what is to become the main subject matter of the canvas presents itself to David showcasing both his vision and talent. Having let experience be his guide, David worked as a mold-maker, sculptor, special effects make-up artist and an art director in FILM/TV. Prior to this, he was a successful portrait artist for professional sports teams in the NFL and MLB. He regularly collaborates with other artists and experiments with new materials broadening his skills. Rau's work has been featured in galleries in Southern California, Idaho, and Japan. Most of his work is held by private collectors. At age 60, David lives and paints in Sun Valley, Idaho. He is married and has two teenage children. When not creating art, David enjoys what his family enjoys; horses and his daughter, Sarah's rodeo, his son, David Jr's skateboarding competitions, cooking with his wife, Mary, and the great outdoors.
